The Morning After: Our verdict on Google's Pixel 8 Pro
The reviews keep coming this week. After all the AI tricks, rock-climbing and specification barrage we saw at Google's big Pixel reveal event, how do Google's flagship smartphones stack up? The surprise highlight is AI, using machine learning and its homemade Tensor G3 chip in a tangible and practical way compared to services like ChatGPT or Midjourney. This includes making your photos look better, videos sound better and adds interactive robo-voice panache to call screening. Both devices once again have incredibly capable cameras, with 5x optical zoom on the Pixel 8 Pro (matching the iPhone 15 Pro Max) and new pro controls too.

Pixel Watch 2 review: Not leading the way, but no longer lagging
Being stressed is not usually a good thing. But when you're reviewing a high-profile smartwatch that touts stress-tracking as one of its most noteworthy new features, experiencing stress can be helpful. During the time I tested the Pixel Watch 2, I was going through a lot emotionally. I was maid of honor at our senior commerce editor's wedding, had a family funeral to think about and was getting updates on the results of my best friend's cancer diagnosis. Add to that the frenzy of Google's hardware launch event and a super tight deadline for this review, and my mental landscape became the perfect testing scenario for the Pixel Watch 2's body-response sensor. That's not the only new feature Google is bringing to its sophomore smartwatch.

The new £350 Google Pixel 2 smartwatch that can tell you if it's time to stop stressing
Google's new smart watch will warn you when you're stressed – and tell you to calm down. The Pixel Watch 2 will measure microscopic beads of sweat on the wrist, alongside heartrate and skin temperature, to work out how the wearer is coping. When a worrying body response is detected, it prompts the user to log their mood, before giving suggestions on interventions, such as guided breathing exercise or going for a walk. The latest update was announced at the tech giant's'Made By Google' event, where it unveiled a host of new features to the £350 device. Among them is a new AI personal trainer added to the associated app by FitBit, the fitness tracking company hat Google bought for £1.8billion in 2019.
Everything Google announced at its Pixel event: Pixel 8, Pixel Watch, Android 14 and more
It was Google's turn on Wednesday to announce a litany of devices and updates. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were the headline acts, though there was lots of interest further down the bill including the reveal of the Pixel Watch 2 and the public version of Android 14 making its way out into the world. You can catch up on everything by watching the Made by Google event yourself or checking out our liveblog for real-time insight and analysis. Alternatively, we've rounded up all the major announcements for you right here. The stars of the Made by Google show are, of course, the company's latest smartphones.

Google Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Watch 2 (2023): Features, Specs, Release Date
Google's October hardware event took place this morning in New York City. During its presentation, the company showed off three new pieces of hardware: the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, and the Pixel Watch 2. The new phones are flush with new features, from secure face authentication and seven years of software support to a built-in thermometer, while the second-generation Pixel Watch has more modest improvements over its predecessor. There are also some software upgrades coming to the Pixel Buds Pro, Google's wireless earbuds. You can read more about that in a separate story. Below is everything you need to know about the Pixel 8 series phones and Pixel Watch 2. If you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a commission.

Google Pixel event liveblog: Live updates on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Watch 2 reveal
With Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and Amazon already having had their fall announcement events this year, Google's hardware keynote is ostensibly the last major launch of 2023. The company has more or less told us what it's going to be unveiling today, teasing us with trailers of the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2. If the keynotes of the other tech giants told us anything, it's that we should expect Google to also pile on with a ton of updates about its developments in generative AI, in addition to the new phones and smartwatch. We'll also probably learn more about features coming to Android 14, and it's highly likely the Assistant gains some new skills as well. The show kicked off on October 4 at 10AM ET, and so far we've covered the release of the Pixel 8 series, including the Pro, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Buds Pro, and new AI features. Stay tuned as we update this liveblog with even more news coming out of the keynote.

The Morning After: Industry leaders say AI presents 'risk of extinction' on par with nuclear war
With the rise of AI language models and tools like ChatGPT and Bard, we've heard warnings from people involved, like Elon Musk, about the risks posed by AI. Now, a group of high-profile industry leaders has issued a one-sentence statement: "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war." It was posted to the Center for AI Safety, an organization with the mission "to reduce societal-scale risks from artificial intelligence," according to its website. Signatories include OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis. Turing Award-winning researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, the godfathers of modern AI, also put their names to it.
